A 17-year-old resident of McKinney faces federal charges for allegedly plotting to assassinate U.S. Representative Keith Self, a Republican serving Texas' third congressional district. Campaign officials confirmed the details of the case to NBC 5, noting that the teenager was apprehended by the Federal Bureau of Investigation on October 5. The congressman’s team was notified of the arrest the following day by U.S. Capitol Police, marking a significant escalation in the security concerns surrounding the lawmaker’s third-term campaign.

According to information provided to the campaign, federal investigators believed the minor had been radicalized and was under active surveillance by federal agents. Authorities indicated that the teen was planning a terrorist attack in the name of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). The primary target of this alleged scheme was a chili cook-off fundraiser for veterans scheduled for October 17. The event was expected to draw considerable attention, with former Dallas Cowboys players and other high-profile guests in attendance.

Rep. Self stated that his team responded to the intelligence by increasing their situational awareness and security measures as early voting periods continued across the state. The congressman, who has previous military experience, explained that his background helped him manage the situation with composure rather than panic. He noted that while many might be shaken by such news, he understood the necessity of determining if the threat posed a lone-wolf danger or part of a larger network.

Self emphasized that his wife, who served as a military spouse for 25 years, also took the threat seriously given her familiarity with the risks associated with public service. The congressman acknowledged that he had received threats in the past, but this instance was distinct because it resulted in a formal arrest. He described the situation as potentially very serious based on the briefings his team received from investigators.

Despite the heightened security posture, Rep. Self attended the scheduled fundraiser as planned. He reported that the event proceeded without incident, during which he judged 19 different varieties of chili and three pots of beans. The congressman described the gathering as delightful and noted that nothing went wrong, allowing him to maintain his public presence during a critical phase of the election cycle.

The lawmaker has continued his campaign activities, including daily poll greeting sessions to meet with voters. He stated that the alleged plot would not deter him from communicating his political ideology to the American public. Self expressed a determination to continue his work, emphasizing that the threat reinforces the need for his continued engagement with constituents.

The incident occurs against a backdrop of Rep. Self’s prominent stance on religious legal systems in the United States. In September, he introduced a nonbinding concurrent resolution denouncing Sharia law and opposing its implementation in the country. The resolution affirms that the U.S. Constitution remains the supreme law of the land. This legislative move aligns with broader political debates within his district, which includes McKinney.

Local politics in McKinney have also been influenced by discussions regarding religious infrastructure. In August, the McKinney City Council unanimously approved a site plan for the expansion of a local mosque, stating that the project complied with municipal development rules. The approval followed hours of contentious public comment and was subsequently followed by an effort to recall several council members, highlighting the intensity of local political discourse.

Evan Hunt, Self’s opponent in the upcoming midterm election, reacted to the news by condemning the alleged assassination plot in a social media post. As the investigation proceeds, the identity of the 17-year-old has not been publicly released. NBC 5 has contacted the FBI Dallas office for further clarification but is awaiting a response as of the time of publication.

The case remains under federal investigation, with authorities continuing to assess the scope of the threat. Rep. Self and his campaign team remain vigilant, balancing their campaign schedule with the security protocols established following the arrest. The situation underscores the evolving nature of threats faced by elected officials during high-stakes election cycles.
